Best Things to Do on Thanksgiving in New York

New York City is one of the best places to spend Thanksgiving. Whether you're a local or visiting from out of town, it's hard to not get swept up in the beautiful fall colors and excitement of the city. Here are the best things to do on and around Thanksgiving in New York.

Macy's Thanksgiving Parade Balloon Inflation

The main event is spectacular to be sure, but the balloon inflation is also something to watch. It takes place near the American Museum of Natural History from 3 to 10pm the day before Thanksgiving.

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

The Thanksgiving Day Parade, now in its 92nd year, is a New York tradition and one not to be missed. This year's lineup will include all the classics: floats, balloons, marching bands, and performers. Some of the biggest names in pop and rock, like John Legend, Leona Lewis, The Barenaked Ladies, and the acapella group Pentatonix will perform this year. The parade runs from 9AM to noon on November 22. The parade begins at Central Park West and West 77th Street and finishes at the Macy's flagship department store on 34th Street. It's best to show up several hours in advance if you want to get a good curbside view of the parade.

Black Friday Shopping

New York City is home to some of the best shopping in the world. The city's premiere department stores, like Barneys New York and Bergdorf Goodman, offer excellent discounts on Black Friday and throughout the Thanksgiving weekend to lure in shoppers. Barneys, for example, has been known to have deals up to 40 percent off select goods. Bloomingdale's and Saks Fifth Avenue are also worth visiting for deals while you're in the city.

Savor The City's Best Restaurants

Whether you're entertaining a large crowd of out-of-town guests or simply don't feel like cooking, New York City has excellent restaurants to savor on Thanksgiving Day. One worth checking out? Il Buco, an Italian restaurant with old-world charm in the East Village. The restaurant is popular for its wine list and excellent menu. Make sure to get a reservation in advance since spots fill up quickly.

Watch the Radio City Christmas Spectacular

This annual show, held at Radio City Music Hall, is as much part of the New York holiday season as the Macy's Parade. The Rockettes are the center of the show with their impressive legwork. The culminating moment in the show is arguably the Live Nativity at the end of the production. The Christmas Spectacular runs for nine weeks. Insider tip: attend the show before Thanksgiving when tickets are at their cheapest.
