How to pack your carry-on: 5 things you need to know

Getting ready for a business trip or vacation? You'll want to make the most of the carry-on luggage space that is available; smart packing can make it happen.

So what does it take to pack your carry-on successfully? Here are five things you need to know:

Think about the essentials

Consider which items you'll need – and which items you'll want – at your disposal before you pack your carry-on

This allows you to differentiate the essentials from the non-essentials.

Sorting items into categories such as clothing, electronics and toiletries may help you get organized.

Meanwhile, putting related items into smaller bags or pouches might allow you to make the most of your carry-on space as well.

Evaluate your trip

Take a close look at where you're going and how long you'll be there, as this can help you determine what to include in your carry-on.

For example, are you traveling from a warm climate to a cold one?

If so, you'll want to include clothing and accessories that will help you stay warm in your carry-on.

In many cases, those who are going from a warm climate to a cold one may want to pack a hat, gloves and other garments to help them stay warm.

Examine your flight

Your flight's length may impact what you decide to include in your carry-on, and perhaps it's easy to understand why.

For those who are taking long flights, you may need headphones, an MP3 player, magazines and other items to help you stay entertained.

On the other hand, those who are flying for shorter periods of time may be able to find other ways to keep busy. And as a result, these flyers may be able to use all of their carry-on space for clothing and other trip essentials.

It never hurts to bring at least one item to help you remain entertained during your flight. Remember, there always is a possibility your flight could be delayed or postponed, and those who bring a book, tablet or other entertainment options should have no trouble passing the time comfortably.

Pack Light

No one wants to bring a heavy, cumbersome carry-on with them while traveling. But those who focus on packing light can avoid this danger altogether

Try to limit the number of items you include in your carry-on. Although some items may seem necessary, it is important to consider your carry-on's weight throughout the packing process.

Furthermore, don't be afraid to pick up items like shampoo, toothpaste and other small but essential products after you reach your final destination. This items usually are inexpensive and easy to find just about anywhere and otherwise could take up valuable space in your carry-on.

Downsize whenever possible

For those who want to bring their own beauty products, be sure to downsize whenever possible.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) typically limits the amount of liquids, gels, creams and ointments in a container to 100 ml or 3.3 oz.

However, those who fill smaller containers with their beauty essentials can conserve carry-on space and eliminate the risk of losing these items at an airport's security checkpoint.

Lastly, it is important to note that carry-ons cannot exceed 45 in. total. As such, you'll want to find a carry-on that holds your essentials and meets TSA requirements, or you may be unable to bring this bag with you at all times.
