Celebrate Independence at These Events around Westchester

Independence Day is often a summer highlight for families and individuals. Backyard picnics and hometown parades build cohesiveness within communities while beaches and mountains beckon eager summer vacationers. Whether you are a resident or a visitor, Westchester County, New York hosts scores of fun and patriotic activities honoring the Fourth of July. From dramatic fireworks displays to colorful parades to exciting musical events, Westchester is where America's birthday gets a loud and proud observance, one matching any other venue in the USA. Some of these July 4th celebrations are particularly worth noting for their long histories and ongoing popularity.

As the founding father John Adams championed, "It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more." Today, few things mark Independence Day more distinctively than fireworks. In 2018, the communities of Ossining and Valhalla continue their annual pyrotechnic displays on the evening of July 3rd. Rye Playland (in Rye, NY) boasts two nights of rockets' red glare on both the 3rd and the 4th. Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown will set off their stash of fireworks on Wednesday, the 4th. Important to remember is that--while most of these happenings are free of charge--parking is often pricey, and sometimes hard to find. A New York car service is an option worth exploring.

Frequently, fireworks are paired with music concerts. For those who enjoy traditional patriotic songs, the Great American Concert and Picnic occurs in Garrison on July 2nd. Attendees will enjoy food, music and a beautiful view overlooking the mighty Hudson River. For the classically-minded, a regularly scheduled string quartet appears on July 5th at Katonah. Meanwhile, the Falcon Saints of Swing bring a unique Latin jazz fusion to Marlboro on the same day. A more cutting-edge performance can be found at Woodstock's Bearsville Theater, where rock sensation Amanda Palmer will perform before leaving on a European tour.

There are other traditions that are rightfully associated with the Fourth of July--and those are sports and recreation. Just over the county line, in the Bronx, the New York Yankees host the Atlanta Braves on Independence Day at 1:05 pm. Independence Day revelers can enjoy a game born in America and played by one of the legendary teams of major league baseball. For active participants, Westchester County parks offer boating, fishing (license required), golf, miniature golf, swimming and hiking. Needless to say, there are multiple ways to work off excess energy. Several parks also contain spacious campgrounds.
