It's a branch of the Smithsonian so admission is free. If you're on a budget, check out the American Folk Art Museum and the Scandinavia House because they're also free. History lovers should head for the Lower East Side Tenement Museum and the Museum of the City of New York. The American Museum of Natural History is the perfect place to bring the kids. Dozens of exhibits will charm them. It's adjacent to the New York Planetarium, making it easy to get to both at the same time. Museum mile, on the edge of Central Park, also makes it easy to get to many museums in a single day.
Cooling Off Outdoors
One of the many great pleasures of New York City is that there are so many ways to cool off outdoors during the summer. Take the A train to the Rockaways. The beach is a short walk away. Stroll across the boardwalk and walk into the water for some of the best surfing you'll find on the entire east coast. Another way to enjoy New York City in the summer is from the deck of the Staten Island ferry. Take the free ferry service from the tip of the island. Sit back and admire the view of downtown from the deck. It'll take you about an hour or an hour and a half to go both ways. Be sure to have a look when the ferry passes in front of the Statue of Liberty.
