Must See Summer Events and Festivals in New York

Summer is a great time to be in New York. The city really comes alive when the weather is warm. If you are planning to visit the Big Apple, you should try to schedule your trip to take advantage of the amazing festivals and events that happen during the summer months. Check out the following guide to help you plan a trip that includes the best events and festivals of the summer in New York.

SummerStage

New York City is known as much for its performance art scene as anything else, and summer is when this scene really comes alive. SummerStage is an outdoor festival of mostly free performances held in parks throughout the five boroughs in August and September. The center of SummerStage is the Central Park SummerStage at Ramsey Playfield, where more than 30 free performances are held over the course of the festival.

NYC Restaurant Week

New York is the best food city on the planet, and NYC Restaurant Week is the perfect way to experience it. Although it is called NYC Restaurant Week, it actually lasts for more than three weeks each summer. During this celebration of the NYC culinary scene, diners can get discounted prices on three-course meals at the best restaurants in the city. Prices are discounted even further for lunch.

Jazz Age Lawn Party

Step back in time to the Roaring Twenties for the Jazz Age Lawn Party. Held on Governor's Island at the end of August, this amazing event allows attendees to dress up in their finest 1920s-style attire and dance to great jazz music from Michael Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra. There is also lots of great food as well as classic cocktails from the 1920s. If you forget to pack your 1920s attire, you can buy vintage clothing at the event from retailers onsite.

Summer Streets

One of the coolest events every summer in New York City is Summer Streets. For three straight Saturdays in August, a seven-mile stretch of Park Avenue and Lafayette Streets is closed to traffic to create a paradise for pedestrians. There are zip lines, a rock climbing wall, loads of art, misting stations, a dog park and walking tours. The highlight of Summer Streets is the 270-foot water slide. Don’t forget to pack your swimsuit.

US Open

Held in Queens, the US Open is one of the biggest tennis tournaments in the world. The brightest tennis stars in the world descend on the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at the end of August to compete for one of the most prized championships in the sport. Fans who attend the US Open get a chance to see stars like Roger Federer, Simona Halep, and Novak Djokovic up close.
