4th of July events in New York 2017

When it comes to celebrations, no other country's efforts come close to the ones put on across the United States each July 4th. Among American destinations, none celebrates July 4th with more fun and energy than New York. Whether it's a hot dog feast, a fireworks show or a night of music New York provides the most diverse and entertaining July 4th activities in the country.

For an exciting 4th of July that will provide great memories for years to come, head over the Upper West Side's Midsummer Night Swing. David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity band will provide live music as you and others pass the night away with exciting swing dancing. Early arrivals can take advantage of free swing dance lessons; so be sure to drop by early if you want to brush up on your moves. The Midsummer Night Swing takes place at Damrosch Park on the Upper West Side and starts at 6 pm, July 4th.

Another can't-miss event in New York on the 4th is the world-renowned Macy's fireworks display. This event is known to be an all-out pyrotechnical masterpiece and this year will be no exception. For 2017, event organizers expect to use at a minimum of 60,000 different fireworks during the display. As usual, the beautiful visuals will be accompanied by live orchestral music. Expect a few unannounced surprises during the evening as well. Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks can be seen from all over New York City. The main event starts at 9:25 pm, July 4th

It wouldn't be the 4th without great food, and it wouldn't be the 4th in New York without the word famous Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. Attendees will watch gastronomical warriors from around the globe battle for the title of hot dog champion. There's always excitement, and once and awhile a little controversy, at this perennial event. Keeping with tradition, the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating contest will be held on Coney Island. The contest begins at 10 am, on July 4th.

For a bit of wholesome nostalgia, head over to Staten Island for the Travis parade. Started in 1911, the Travis parade is the longest running 4th of July parade in the United States. You'll experience a lively and patriotic crowd, dozens of interesting floats and plenty of American flags as far as the eye can see. The Travis parade begins at 12:30 pm and travels down Victory Boulevard in Travis, Staten Island.

Not to be outdone by the other boroughs, Brooklyn will again hold its own 4th of July spectacular. The Brooklyn Navy Yard hosts a family-friendly barbecue featuring some of the best eats in the city. After the feast, stick around for one of the most spectacular views of the Macy's Fireworks display. Music and dancing will be provided for all of those who want to show their 4th of July Spirit.
