Having enough time to ourselves and to indulge in our favorite activities and hobbies can seem like a daunting proposition when you’re a working adult with responsibilities left and right. Gone are the days when summer break meant an almost endless amount of days to slowly figure out what you want to do and who you want to spend it with.
However, it’s important for us to remember that our well-being is directly tied to how much quality time we spend on ourselves. If you’ve been neglecting to take some time off (or you were just unable to), you’ll want to grab the opportunity coming your way this summer. It’s understandable that you might still only have a limited amount of time to take a break, so we’ve listed down out top favorite summer day trips just for you right here:
If you’re looking for an activity that can be planned, organized, and prepared for on the spot, camping is one of it. All you’ll need is a tent, a sleeping bag, and a backpack and you’re good to go. For food supplies and other essentials, you can always stop along the way to your intended camping ground.
Suggestion: Camp Gateway Brooklyn Tamarak and Goldenrod
Location: Floyd Bennett Field, Brooklyn, NY 11234
Summer can get hot, and if you’ve never really been interested in outdoor activities that generate sweat, the museum seems like a pretty cool alternative (literally). Admission is usually free or kept to a minimum, and you’ll be surprised at just how easy it is to spend an entire day indoors with the many fascinating exhibits on display.
Suggestion: Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)
Location: 11 West 53rd St., New York , New York 10019
Opening Hours: 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (Mon to Thurs, Sat & Sun), 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Fri)

As physical activities go, hiking is pretty high up on most people’s list. It’s relatively easy to pick up and get used to, and there are usually beginner trails that everyone can start off with. Just make sure to put on a good pair of shoes, bring along a water bottle and even some light snacks to munch on whenever you rest along the way.
Suggestion: Sleeping Beauty Mountain @ Fort Anne
Distance: 5 to 7.5 miles (depending on route)
Even if you’re not into water slides or other kinds of water amusements, it’s still a good place to visit during the summer. If your goal is to soak in the sun and indulge in a good book, this is as good a place as any. It’s also one of the summer’s most inexpensive activities, and it’s definitely a lot of fun for people looking to have fun.
Suggestion: SplashDown Beach
Location: 16 Old Route 9 West, Fishkill, NY 12524

Summer is one season of the year where most activities are held outdoors due to ideal temperatures. That means that concerts can be enjoyed under the night sky too. Rather than sit at home and stare at a screen, you should consider attending a summer outdoor concert. Most of them are free, and if you’ve got a picnic basket and a couple of friends with you, you’re bound to have a good time.
Suggestion: Blue Note Jazz Festival @ Several Locations
Location: Several Locations (do check out the website for more info)

Although you can always buy what you need at the supermarket or farmer’s market, picking your own produce for consumption is an entirely different scenario. For one, you’ll literally be able to enjoy the fruits of your harvest, and it’s also an excellent opportunity for young children to understand just how their food is grown and harvested.
Suggestion: Samascott Orchards
Location: 5 Sunset Ave, Kinderhook, NY 12106
Opening Hours: Do check the website for more info

Zoos aren’t just for excited children. As adults, you might even realize just how much there is to discover and learn about our planet’s creatures. Though food prices can be a little steep, the experience will definitely be worth it. Just remember that weekends are bound to be packed with families, so do visit during a weekday if you prefer not to join the crowd.
Suggestion: Central Park Zoo

From e-books and audiobooks to DVDs and other free programs, the library can actually be a good source of indoor activities for all ages.
